Liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have shown signs of recovery, although the improvement captured in Bloomberg’s reporting remained far short of normal trading conditions.

Ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg and Kpler showed at least three LNG cargoes leaving the waterway during the reporting period. Outbound flows were still more than 75% below pre-conflict levels.

The partial recovery offered some prospect of relief for buyers facing constrained supplies. However, reports of attacks on commercial vessels underlined the continued danger to shipping.

For the LNG market, successful individual transits provide limited reassurance. Producers and buyers need sustained vessel movements to restore predictable loading schedules and delivery commitments.

The distinction is commercially significant. A cargo reaching its destination does not establish that subsequent shipments can follow on comparable terms or without disruption.

For African businesses considering LNG imports, the situation illustrates the importance of assessing fuel supply alongside the power plant or industrial facility it would serve. Access to gas involves shipping arrangements, delivery obligations and contingency planning as well as the commodity price.

A sustained recovery in traffic could improve supply availability. Continued disruption would leave buyers exposed to uncertainty over delivery timing and replacement cargoes.

The reported rebound should therefore be understood as a partial improvement within a disrupted market. It does not establish that the shipping route has returned to normal operations.
